Course Description:

This is an introductory course in spreadsheet applications. The course provides basic concepts and practical applications using Microsoft Excel 2007 for Windows. Students receive instruction and computer experience using electronic spreadsheets to solve common numerical and accounting based problems.

Prerequisite(s):

CIS 70A - Computer Business Applications

Textbooks & Other Required Materials:

Parsons, Oja, Ageloff, Carey, New Prespectives in Microsoft Office Excel 2007, Comprehensive, Course Technology, ISBN 13: 978-1-4239-0585-1, ISBN 10: 1-4239-0585-7

Other handouts and readings may be assigned as appropriate.

WinZip ($29) - The "industry standard" utility program used to combine and compress files prior to transmitting them across the Internet. I feel strongly that every serious PC user should have and use WinZip; therefore, even if you were not taking this class, I would recommend that you download and install this software package! (Note: Current version is 8.1; previous versions will probably work fine, but upgrades to 8.1 may be free!)

You need to have Microsoft Excel 2007 to complete your assignments and exercises. Previous editions of Excel do not have the new features we will be studying and using in this class.

You must have your own computer and internet access to participate in this class.

Class Participation

Online courses involve different methods of learning, and flexible weekly participation; however, they do not require any less time. The same class taught in a traditional classroom requires five hours of class participation per week. In addition, you will spend a minimum of two to six hours per week completing your programming assignments. Therefore, to receive full credit, you need to discipline yourself from the beginning to complete all assignments each and every week, and turn them in on time.

Participation also includes frequent use of the class forum for sharing ideas with your classmates and requesting assistance with problems you have encountered or concepts that are not easily understood. You should plan on visiting the forum at least three times each week to state questions and to respond to issues that have been submitted by your classmates.

Weekly Assignments

Each week I will post your assignments and programming exercises to the Schedule page, along with my supplemental handouts. You will complete your programming exercises and post them to the COD online web server, where I will review them and send my comments to you via e-mail.
